Why rugby players wear grip socks
Rugby asks more of a boot than most sports. You drive from a set scrum, sprint a support line, step off either foot and then do it all again on grass that gets softer by the minute. Inside the boot, a standard sock is sliding the whole time. By the second half your foot is working against the boot instead of with it.
LUX® grip socks fix the inside of the boot. Dual Grip™ technology puts grip pads on the inside of the sock, holding your foot, and on the outside, holding the boot. The three lock together. You feel it first in the scrum, when the drive goes straight through your heel instead of shifting under it.
Rugby players wear the grip sock under the team sock. Most cut the foot off the club sock so only the grip sole is in the boot, and pull the club sock up over the grip sock's leg. Kit rules are about what's visible, and what's visible is still your club colours.
Over 1 million pairs sold across cleat sports. Tested to 100+ match washes, which in rugby terms is a lot of mud. 100-day guarantee on every pair.
Which LUX sock for rugby?
Rugby grip socks: your questions
Do you wear grip socks over or under rugby socks?
Under. Put the grip sock on first, then your club sock over the top. Most players cut the foot section off the club sock so the boot only contains the grip sock, and the club sock covers the leg for kit colours.
Are grip socks legal in rugby?
Kit regulations in rugby govern what is visible on the field, and a grip sock worn under the club sock isn't visible. Players at club and school level wear them routinely. If your competition has specific rules, check with your kit manager, but there is no general rule against a sock under a sock.
How do you cut rugby socks for grip socks?
Cut across the club sock just above the ankle bone, so the foot section comes away and the leg stays. Pull the grip sock on, then pull the cut club sock up over it. Some players fold the cut edge under for a cleaner line.
Do grip socks help in the scrum?
In a scrum your heel is driving backwards into the boot and any slide inside the boot is lost drive. Dual Grip™ holds the foot against the boot so the push goes into the ground. It's the difference between a foot that shifts and a foot that stays planted.
Do grip socks work on wet grass and mud?
The grip is inside the boot, between your foot and the insole, so it doesn't matter what the outside of the boot is standing in. Wet grass, mud, a heavy pitch in February, the sock is doing the same job.
Knee or calf grip socks for rugby?
Knee if you cut your club socks and want the grip sock to be the full leg. Calf if you keep your club sock intact and just want grip in the boot. Both have the same Dual Grip™ sole; the difference is how much leg you want covered.
How do you wash muddy grip socks?
Rinse the worst of it off, then cold wash inside out and air dry. Skip fabric softener, which coats the grip pads. LUX socks are tested to 100+ match washes and covered by a 100-day guarantee, so a season of mud is what they're built for.
